Smearing on the insulation, which I am sure was asbestos. I remember my grandfather doing just this on boiler jackets, we used to play in it.

This is another great example of a building, if modeled, would be considered too “gimmicky” to be considered realistic. This would be a great building to model exactly as shown, and display with this picture, if only to prove a point.
Plus, I love the dog house on the roof.
